Li-Fi (Wifi FSO)
Overview
Li-Fi is a method of wireless communication somewhat similar to Wi-Fi, except that uses light to transmit data over a variety of spectrums using devices like LED bulbs. It is somewhat similar to FSO in it’s use of light waves for communication but over a broad “broadcast” area. Pros include lack of overpenetration for secure applications and lack of interference with radio communications. Currently there is an IEEE standard, 802.11bb for this type of light based communication.
Li-Fi tests have been done, such as a module launched by Oledcomm aboard ESA’s Ariane 6 in 2024 and the SpaceX Sat7 nanosatellite in 2023, with potential applications including communications between various components of a satellite’s systems, in order to cut down on necessary wiring and weight.
