Evaluation of a Multimode Receiver with a Photonic Integrated Combiner for Satellite to Ground Optical Communications
Summary
This paper evaluates the comparative performance with regard to atmospheric turbulence in Free Space Optic (FSO) communications of a multimode receiver based upon coherent combination and a single-model receiver. Focus is on optical links from a GEO satellite to an Optical Ground Station (OGS). The paper concludes that multimode receivers perform better in atmospheric turbulence with lower power penalty at a given BER. The paper stresses that the number of modes considered for the multimode receiver is critical to optimize the performance of the receiver.
